The Bachelorette: This Time I'm Reading the Spoilers
I love surprises. I love surprises so much that if you handed me a Tiffany’s box today and said, “Don’t open this until Christmas,” I literally wouldn't go near it until the big day. The anticipation is just that delicious to me. This love of surprises has turned me into a spoilerphobe. During the 2012 Olympics I refused to turn on my computer outside of the hours of 12am-4am, in case an announcement from overseas leaked. Most of the time I was successful, although I was heartbroken when I saw that Ryan Lochte beat Michael Phelps in the 400 IM, a race I had waited for for months. But I digress… I think I’m the only American left, who actively dodges spoilers, and you know what? I wish I hadn’t.
This season I watched the Bachelor, knowing exactly where the spoilers were and purposely avoiding them, because I didn’t want to know who the winner was going to be. Was I pleasantly surprised when Sean picked Catherine? No. I was confused. I hadn’t seen the slightest connection between these two throughout the entire season. In fact, I was almost positive Catherine was going home every week. What had I missed? And why had everyone else seemed so confident in this union before it even happened?
Oh yeah. The spoiler. That’s what I missed. It seems that ABC was so afraid America would figure out the winner that they edited out all the good stuff, leaving me, the lone spoilerphobe completely clueless at the end of the season.
Well, I’ve got news for you ABC. I didn’t get to the end of the season and say, “Oh! They got me good! And to think, all along I thought it would be Desiree, or Ashlee or Lindsay.” Nope. I was pissed. And that’s when I realized something that I’ve known all along. You don’t watch rom coms because they’re unpredictable. You’re not looking for a big twist. You know exactly how that movie ends. They’re gonna end up together. It’s the same story every time. And yet, we still love it. Why? Because we love the journey. We want to see these people fall in love. The Bachelor is not an epic race between to powerhouse swimmers. It’s a love story (however contrived), and it’s value isn’t in the twists and turns but the simple journey.
So, what I’m saying is you robbed me, ABC. I saw Sean fall in love with every other girl but the one girl he was actually falling in love with. And for that reason, this time, I’m reading the spoilers.
